A stall keeper at the city market gave awa (kava) as a “present” for every ten-cent purchase of apples and/or vegetables.
Selling awa was illegal, but he claimed he wasn’t selling it.
Was the stall keeper found guilty of illegally dealing awa?
Read more about it in “Awa Was a Present.”

Have you ever tried fish pudding? For this dish, you can include awa (milkfish), awa-aua (Hawaiian ladyfish), and oio (bonefish).
Mrs. J. H. Coney (Laura Coney) compiled recipes for this and other dishes, which included Hawaiian fish, squid, lobster, crab, and turtle. Today, you probably can’t prepare the latter, but can prepare deviled crabs, lobster farci, and mullet in ti leaves. Check out these seafood recipes.
