Kulamea: A Little Romance of Honolulu

In 1893, after overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, a Texas newspaper ran a fictional love story of Mr. Balfour and Kulamea, a daughter of a wealthy Hawaiian in Honolulu.

The story’s dialogue featured Pidgin and used local terms including “pau,” “luna,” and “pilikia.”
