Scouting in Hawaii

Inspired by a boy who helped him through dense fog in London, William D. Boyce, a traveling American business man, founded Boy Scouts of America in 1910. In the same year, Hawaii artist and outdoorsman named Hitchcock learned about scouting in California and brought it to Hawaii.

In 1912, Juliette Gordon Low would found the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (then “Girl Guides”). On March 12, 1912, she gather eighteen girls in Savannah, Georgia, for the first Girl Scout troop meeting to get them to perform community service. Five years later, Florence Lowe, a teacher at the Kamehameha School for Girls, coordinated the first Girl Scout troop in Hawaii, and another girl scout troop was meeting in Kakaako.Shortly after the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts’ establishment in Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Maui News reported news about them.

From 1912 to 1917, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin ran a section that covered the boy scouts of Hawaii. Items included news of each troop, announcements, “Boy Scout Notes” of troops on the mainland United States, and the schedule for weekend camps.

From 1917 to 1922, the Maui News ran sections that covered the boy scouts and girl scouts of Maui. Items include news of each troop and national scouting news.
