Dole’s Pineapple Juice

A tonic prescribed by doctors and nurses for curing indigestion, restoring appetite and blood, and cleansing and hydrating the body. That’s what the manufacturer of Dole’s Pineapple Juice claims in its ads. That, and the juice is so pure that “even air does not touch it.”

The ads suggest other uses of pineapple juice. One ad says Dole’s Pineapple Juice can be served not only as cold juice, but also in Russian tea (hot or iced) and as a substitute for lemon. Ads also offer to mail recipe booklets, free on request, including “How to Serve Dole’s Pure Hawaiian Pineapple Juice” and “Cooling Drinks and Desserts.”

Hawaiian Pineapple Company owner James Drummond Dole’s cousin, Sanford B. Dole has requested that the Hawaiian Pineapple Company products not use the Dole name. However, ads for “Dole’s Pineapple Juice” started showing up in American mainland newspapers in 1910, some of which can be seen below.
