King Kalakaua Travels Around the World

In 1881, King Kalakaua traveled around the world to study immigration, develop diplomatic relations, and observe other rulers.

This year-long trip made Kalakaua the first monarch to travel around the world:

He met heads of state: U.S. President Chester A. Arthur, Queen Victoria of England, Pope Leo XIII, the Meiji Emperor of the Empire of Japan, Umberto I of Italy, Viceroy of Egypt Tewfik Pasha, William I of Germany, King Louis and Prince Henry of Portugal, and Rama V of Siam.

The PCA would later turn the column into a book. The Hawaiian Gazette also reported on the trip. Some of these articles can be seen in the links below.
