Military Section

Because of Hawaii’s location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the United States established a strong military presence there and built infantry and naval bases, including Fort Shafter (1907), Schofield Barracks (1908), and Fort Ruger (1909).

World War I (1914-1918) brought more military personnel into Hawaii. Thus, from 1916 to 1917, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and The Pacific Commercial Advertiser ran the “Army & Navy” section. It included local, national, and international military news and columns reporting base news (“Fort Shafter Notes” and “DeRussey Notes”).
